Celebrating Women's Wellbeing

International Women's Day, celebrated every March, celebrates the economic, social, political, and cultural achievements of women worldwide. It is also a reminder to us to take care of and cherish the women in our lives. This commitment to women's wellbeing should extend to every day of the year and starts with women prioritising self-care.

Let's explore some important aspects when it comes to women's health and how best women can nurture their wellbeing.

Hormones - their role and impact on women's health

Hormones play a powerful role in women's health. They control various bodily processes, from women's sleep-wake cycle to growth and development as well as mood, and overall wellbeing.

Changes in hormones can impact the overall health of the body. A hormonal imbalance can happen if one has too little or too much of one or more hormones. Since they play such an important role across so many areas of women's daily functioning, such imbalances need to be addressed.

Understanding hormonal changes across different life stages

Women undergo hormonal changes through varied stages in life - from puberty, the reproductive years, pregnancy, post-partum, perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause. Understanding these stages and the respective changes is important for women to be able to manage their health effectively. Seeking medical counsel is thus imperative to women, given the complexity of hormonal fluctuations across a women's life.

Common symptoms of hormonal imbalance

Hormonal imbalance can be caused due to various conditions - diabetes, thyroid disease, obesity, acne, irregular menstruation, and infertility. Symptoms vary depending on the imbalance and may affect skin, hair, bodily functions, and mood. From physical symptoms like a slow or rapid heartbeat, numbness and tingling in the hands, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, constipation, diarrhoea, dry or coarse skin or hair, fatigue to mental health-related issues like depression or anxiety, there can be many signs or symptoms experienced. If one notices a change in one's day-to-day health and is experiencing persistent new symptoms, it's important to reach out to a healthcare provider.

Simple lifestyle shifts to support hormonal balance

Although aging and other factors are beyond our control, simple lifestyle changes can support hormonal imbalance. These include maintaining a healthy weight, regularly exercising, eating a healthy, balanced diet, getting the required amount of quality sleep daily, managing stress, as well as chronic health conditions, when needed.

Creating a supportive workplace environment for women's health

Supporting women’s health in the workplace begins with awareness. It starts with awareness. Many women may not realise they are experiencing hormonal imbalance. Regular workshops and health check-ups are a way to address this. Introducing meditation or yoga workshops can also empower women to manage stress and improve wellbeing.

Closing thoughts

Supporting women's health is not solely a woman's responsibility - it's a shared human duty. Women form the very fabric of our communities as mothers, daughters, partners, colleagues, and leaders. By prioritizing women’s wellbeing we strengthen families, communities, workplaces, and future generations. A healthier woman means a healthier world!
