Are E-Cigarettes or Vapes Helpful to Quit Smoking?

If you are a smoker, quitting smoking is one of the best decisions you can make for your health. Smoking affects every organ in your body, including your heart. However, many people consider opting for e-cigarettes or vapes in an attempt to ease the transition from smoking traditional cigarettes to not smoking at all. But is smoking via these devices better than not smoking at all? Let’s explore some key aspects related to this subject.

What substances do e-cigarettes and vapes contain?

E-cigarettes contain nicotine – a substance extracted from tobacco which is highly addictive in nature – along with other chemicals and flavourings. Moreover, they might also include potentially harmful substances such as pesticides, caffeine, and flavourings linked with respiratory irritation and toxic effects of sorts.

How does consuming e-cigarettes or vaping affect the body?

The primary agent in e-cigarettes is nicotine, which is extremely addictive, causing cravings for the next smoke or withdrawal symptoms should you resist the craving. Nicotine increases your blood pressure and causes spikes in adrenaline levels which might lead to an increase in the heart rate and the chances of having a heart attack. Data suggests that e-cigarettes might lead to asthma and chronic lung conditions as well.

Vaping coats the lungs with potentially harmful chemicals, as e-liquid compositions include nicotine, aromatic substances, and flavourings among others, dissolved in an oily liquid base. The vapourised elements of the oil, which get deep into the lungs, might cause inflammation.

Additionally, vaping devices might contain vitamin E, which is often used as a delivery and thickening agent in e-liquids. While it’s safe to apply on the skin or consume orally as a supplement, it is most likely an irritant when inhaled, found in those with vaping-related, severe damage in the lungs. These are just some of the negative effects of vaping on the body

Can your lungs heal from vaping or e-cigarettes?

With medication, some damage done to your lungs by vaping might get better in time. However, conditions like lung scarring are permanent. Constant irritation to your lungs might lead to health problems like asthma over time, and such conditions won’t go away.

While there is limited data providing an insight into the long-term effects of vaping at the moment, based on the data available on cigarettes, similar worrying health effects like heart disease, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be expected.
