An Introduction to New Age Medicine and Integrative Care
In this day and age, the world is increasingly embracing medicinal remedies and therapy, going beyond conventional medicine to explore alternatives. In many instances, with the increase in effectiveness and safety of alternative sources of medicine, such therapies are paired with conventional medicine, the combination referred to as complementary or integrative medicine. Generally, this approach to medicine is used in cases where people show symptoms of anxiety, fatigue, or pain and can help people who are dealing with conditions like headaches, fibromyalgia, and cancer.
To gain a better understanding of the universe of such new age complementary or alternative care, let’s explore some of these sources:
Diet
In cases where imbalance in the body or chronic issues results from unhealthy diets that are rich in fats, oils, sugars, and complex carbohydrates, many recovery-based approaches target dietary aspects of one’s wellbeing, including the use of natural herbs and remedies. These may include herbal medicine, nutritional remedies, and dietary supplements.
Body
Since time immemorial, physical therapy has been used as a form of medical care. This method of healing is based on the notion that an injury or illness in one area of the body can affect all parts of the body. It explores the idea that if the other parts can be brought back to health with external intervention, then the body can fully devote its energies to healing the injury or illness. Often, such body techniques are combined with the mind. Some therapies include yoga, massages, chiropractic medicine, tai chi, resilience training and body movement therapies, among others.
Mind
The connection between the mind and body has been recognised by conventional medicine. Studies indicate that people heal faster and better with good mental and emotional health. Therapies that focus on the mind may include meditation, hypnosis, or even biofeedback.
Expressive Therapies
Many people believe that the quality of the five senses can impact one’s overall wellbeing and health. This has led the way to alternative therapies that are more creative in nature, including dance, music, art, guided imagery, visualisation, aromatherapy, and even animal therapy!
Traditional Alternative Medicine
This field includes therapies such as homoeopathy, acupuncture, ayurveda, naturopathy, and Chinese or Oriental medicine, the better known and mainstream forms of therapy that have been practised across the ages.
External Energy
There is a school of thought that believes that external energies from other sources or objects can also have an impact on a person’s health. Some examples of such forms of therapy include Reiki, Qigong, or electromagnetic therapy.
Such treatments are to be considered as a form of integrative or complementary medicine – they are to be used alongside standard medical treatment and not as a substitute for conventional medicine. Before embarking upon such alternative therapies, please consult a doctor beforehand. Also, make sure that you have fully ascertained the effectiveness of the chosen method of therapy according to your needs or on the basis of your health condition.
